Our interest in symbols has a manifold origin; in the first place there is the confrontation with the poetic image, and the sense that, behind the metaphor lies something more than an ornamental substitute for reality; then, our contact with the art of today, such a fertile source of visual imagery in which the mysterious is an almost constant component.
